Speed climbing is the racing discipline of competitive climbing. Athletes climb a standardized route on a 15-metre wall as quickly as possible, protected by automatic belays, with electronic timing from the start system to the finish pad.
What makes Speed different from other climbing disciplines?
Lead and bouldering competitions present athletes with routes or problems that change. Speed is fundamentally different because the route is standardized. Athletes know the wall and hold positions in advance and can practice the same movement problem repeatedly. That changes the competitive question from “can you solve this new route?” to “how precisely and quickly can you execute a known route?”

How a race works
Athletes begin from the regulated start setup, respond to the starting signal and climb toward the finish pad. Electronic timing records the run. Qualification and seeding organize the field, while later rounds can use direct elimination races. Why the route can still be technically difficult
Knowing the route does not remove the performance problem. Athletes must coordinate hands, feet, hips and center of mass at very high velocity. Individual reach, strength and preferred beta can change how the same standardized sequence is executed. How athletes train for Speed
Training can include route repetition, section practice, explosive power, strength, reaction work, coordination, race simulation and recovery. Why Speed has official records
Because the route and timing environment are standardized, eligible performances can be compared across sanctioned events. World, continental, Olympic and relay records can therefore be formally recognized. The Records & Performance Data Center maintains verification-dated current records and historical progression.
Is Speed climbing in the Olympics?
Speed appeared at climbing’s Olympic debut as part of the combined format at Tokyo 2020, became a dedicated medal discipline at Paris 2024 and is scheduled as a standalone discipline again at Los Angeles 2028. Olympic Speed uses the same core standardized-race concept while Games-specific qualification and event procedures are governed by the applicable Olympic and federation rules.
